Bizerte Old Port
Fishing boats and pastel houses between a kasbah and a fort
Bizerte, Tunisia's northernmost city, lies about 65 km north of Tunis where a lake opens to the Mediterranean. Its old port is a narrow inlet lined with whitewashed and pastel houses and crowded with small fishing boats. On one side stands the walled kasbah, a living neighbourhood with its own lanes and mosque; across the water is the smaller Ksiba fort. Nearby are the medina's souks and the octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque. The city also has a long corniche with beaches heading north towards Cap Blanc, one of the northernmost points of Africa.
