Ichkeul National Park
Lake, marshes and mountain hosting vast winter bird flocks
Ichkeul National Park, southwest of Bizerte, surrounds a large lake and marshes at the foot of Jebel Ichkeul, an isolated mountain rising to about 500 m. It was inscribed as a natural World Heritage Site in 1980. The lake's water shifts between fresh and salty with the seasons, which supports a rich habitat for migratory birds: in winter hundreds of thousands of ducks, geese and coots gather here. An eco-museum on the mountainside explains the ecosystem and has views over the water. Trails lead along the slopes, and the park also has a herd of water buffalo.
