Bulla Regia
Roman villas built underground to escape the summer heat
Bulla Regia lies at the foot of Jebel Rebia near Jendouba, in the fertile Medjerda valley. It was a Numidian royal town before becoming a prosperous Roman city. It is famous for a feature found nowhere else on this scale: wealthy residents built a second storey below ground, with rooms around a sunken courtyard, to stay cool in the fierce summer heat. Several of these villas, such as the House of the Hunt and the House of Amphitrite, keep their mosaic floors in place, so you see them where they were laid. The site also has a theatre, baths and a forum.
