Thuburbo Majus
Roman town with a hilltop capitol among wheat fields
Thuburbo Majus stands on a low rise near El Fahs, about 60 km southwest of Tunis. A Punic and Berber town before the Romans, it became a municipium under Hadrian and a colony under Commodus, and prospered from the grain of the surrounding plain. Its landmark is the capitol, dedicated in AD 168, whose tall Corinthian columns dominate the paved forum. Around it you can explore temples, a market, a portico of pink marble columns and two bath complexes. The site is open and quiet; in spring the ruins are surrounded by green fields and wild flowers.
