Testour
Andalusian town with a minaret clock that runs backwards
Testour, on the Medjerda about 75 km west of Tunis, was settled in the early 17th century by Moriscos expelled from Spain. Their heritage shows in the town's tiled roofs, street layout and the Great Mosque, whose square minaret, with its Spanish-style brick decoration, carries a clock whose hands turn anticlockwise. Testour is also a centre of malouf, the Andalusian-Tunisian musical tradition, celebrated at an annual festival, and it is known for its pomegranates in autumn. It makes a natural stop on the road between Tunis and Dougga.
