Chenini
Berber village carved into a ridge below its hilltop granary
Chenini is a Berber village about 18 km west of Tataouine, built along the flanks of a rocky ridge. Its houses are partly dug into the cliff and stacked in terraces, and a fortified granary crowns the summit, with a white mosque on the saddle below. Some residents still live in the old village, while many have moved to the new settlement in the valley. A short walk leads to the Mosque of the Seven Sleepers, where local tradition places the tombs of Christian youths who slept for centuries; the graves are unusually long. The views over the desert mountains are striking.
