Douiret
A deserted Berber hill village with a ksar on its summit
Douiret, about 22 km southwest of Tataouine, is one of the most atmospheric of the old Berber villages of the Dahar. Houses, many of them with rooms cut into the rock, spread across a hillside below a ksar granary on the summit. Most families left in the second half of the 20th century for the new village built on the plain below, and the old site is now largely empty and quiet. A white mosque, still in use, stands out among the ruins, and paths lead up to the ksar for wide views. A traditional guesthouse offers meals and rooms in restored dwellings.
