Dougga

Tunisia's best-preserved Roman town, on a hillside of olives

Dougga, ancient Thugga, covers a hillside above the Khalled valley, about 110 km southwest of Tunis. A Numidian town that was later heavily Romanised, it was inscribed by UNESCO in 1997 as one of the best-preserved Roman small towns in North Africa. Its capitol, dedicated in AD 166, still stands almost to its full height above the forum. The theatre, built in AD 168, seated around 3,500 people and is used for a summer festival. Other highlights are the Libyco-Punic mausoleum, a rare pre-Roman tower tomb, the Temple of Juno Caelestis, baths, houses and a well-preserved latrine.
