Ennejma Ezzahra Palace
Baron d'Erlanger's palace, now a centre for Arab music
Ennejma Ezzahra ("the bright star") was built between 1912 and 1922 by Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger, a painter and musicologist who devoted his life to the study of Arab music. Set in terraced gardens on the slope of Sidi Bou Saïd, the palace combines Tunisian, Andalusian and Moroccan craftsmanship: carved stucco, painted wooden ceilings, marble and tilework. Since 1992 it has housed the Centre for Arab and Mediterranean Music, which keeps a collection of historic instruments and recordings. Visitors can see the reception rooms, the courtyard and the gardens, and concerts are held in the palace during the year.
