La Marsa & Gammarth beaches
Tunis's seaside suburbs: sandy bays, corniche cafés and fish
La Marsa, at the northern end of the Carthage coast, was a summer retreat of the beys and is now a relaxed residential town with a long sandy beach and a busy seafront. Its best-known landmark is the Café Saf-Saf, set around an old well where water was traditionally drawn by a camel. A few kilometres north, Gammarth climbs a wooded hill above the bay, with the capital's large beach hotels, a small fishing port and seafood restaurants. The beaches are family-friendly and very busy on summer weekends; outside July and August they are quiet and good for long walks.
