Gafsa Roman Pools & Kasbah

Ancient Capsa's spring-fed Roman pools and Hafsid kasbah

Gafsa, an oasis city on the road between the coast and Tozeur, is one of the oldest inhabited places in Tunisia; it gave its ancient name, Capsa, to the prehistoric Capsian culture. In the centre, two Roman pools fed by warm springs are still filled with water, surrounded by stone steps and old houses, and local boys sometimes dive into them from the walls. Next to them, the small archaeological museum displays mosaics, including a well-known circus scene, and prehistoric tools. A short walk away, the kasbah, rebuilt under the Hafsids in the 15th century, faces the palm grove.
