Tamerza
The largest mountain oasis, with waterfalls and a ghost village
Tamerza is the largest of the mountain oases near the Algerian border, about 70 km north of Tozeur. Like Chebika, its old village was abandoned after the 1969 floods, and its mud-brick houses, mosque and domed shrines now stand empty on a low rise above the riverbed, facing the new town. Tamerza's main attraction is the Grande Cascade, a waterfall that drops into a pool in a rocky gorge surrounded by palms, with cafés beside it. The drive from Chebika crosses a spectacular mountain road with views over the desert plain.
