Chebika
Mountain oasis with a spring, a gorge and an abandoned village
Chebika sits at the foot of the Jebel el Negueb, about 60 km north of Tozeur near the Algerian border. The old mud-brick village on the rocky slope was abandoned after catastrophic floods in 1969, and its inhabitants moved to a new village nearby. A short trail climbs past the ruins to a spring and a small waterfall that feed a palm-shaded stream running through a narrow gorge. From the rocks above, the view stretches over the palms to the flat Chott el Gharsa. Chebika is usually visited with Tamerza and Midès on the same day.
