Guellala
Djerba's pottery village and its island heritage museum
Guellala, on the south coast of Djerba, has been the island's pottery centre for centuries, using clay dug from the surrounding hills. Along the main road, workshops, some of them half-buried to keep the clay damp, sell amphorae, jars and glazed dishes, and potters often demonstrate the wheel. On the hill above the village, the Guellala Museum presents Djerban traditions through life-size scenes: weddings, crafts, costumes and everyday life, as well as legends of the island. From its terrace you can see across the strait to the mainland.
