Houmt Souk
Djerba's market town of souks, fondouks and a seafront fort
Houmt Souk, literally "market quarter", is the main town of Djerba and part of the island's World Heritage inscription of 2023. Its compact centre is a network of covered souks and small squares shaded by trees, with old fondouks, caravanserais where travelling merchants once lodged, some now converted into guesthouses. By the harbour stands Borj el Kebir, a fort rebuilt in the 15th century and taken by the corsair Dragut in 1560, when a tower of skulls was raised nearby. The Djerba Traditional Heritage Museum shows costumes, jewellery and pottery. The port holds a lively fish auction in the mornings.
