Hammamet Medina & Kasbah
Walled old town and fortress right on the beach
Hammamet's small medina stands on a point directly above the beach, enclosed by walls largely rebuilt in the 15th century. Its kasbah, at the seaward corner, can be visited: stairs lead onto the ramparts for views over the bay and the old cemetery beside the sea. Inside the walls, whitewashed lanes hold houses, a mosque and a row of souvenir shops near the gate. In the 20th century the town attracted artists and writers; the villa of the Romanian designer George Sebastian, now the International Cultural Centre, lies a short distance west.
