Zarzis
Olive groves, fishing port and long quiet beaches
Zarzis is a coastal town on the mainland just south of Djerba, linked to the island by the ancient El Kantara causeway. It is surrounded by olive groves and palm trees, and its economy rests on fishing, olive oil and tourism. North of the town a strip of hotels lines long, gently shelving sandy beaches that are quieter than those of Djerba. The town centre has a busy market, a fishing port where sponges were traditionally landed, and a small museum on local history and heritage. It is a relaxed day out combining beach time and a look at everyday southern life.
