Ong Jemel & Mos Espa (Star Wars set)
Camel-neck rock and the desert town of Tatooine
North of Nefta, a sandy track leads to Ong Jemel, whose name means "the camel's neck" after a rock formation that resembles a sitting camel's head and neck. The eroded cliffs and open plain here have appeared in several films, including The English Patient. A few kilometres away, among the dunes, stands the set of Mos Espa, the spaceport town of Tatooine built for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999). Its domed buildings and towers are largely intact and are visited by fans from around the world, although the dunes gradually encroach on them. Sunset over the dunes is the highlight.
