Midès Canyon
A deep canyon on the Algerian border, seen in The English Patient
Midès is a small oasis a few kilometres west of Tamerza, right on the Algerian border. Its abandoned old village perches on the edge of a dramatic canyon whose layered rock walls drop steeply to a palm-lined riverbed. Viewpoints and paths along the rim give views down into the gorge, and it is possible to walk part of the canyon floor with a local guide. The canyon has been used as a film location, notably for The English Patient (1996). Because of its position on the border, the police may check documents on the road.
