Ancient sea-cliff quarries that supplied the stone of Carthage
Near the town of El Haouaria, at the northern tip of Cap Bon, the sandstone cliffs are hollowed by dozens of man-made chambers. These are ancient quarries, worked from Punic times into the Roman period, and the stone was shipped across the gulf to build Carthage. Quarrymen cut downwards from small openings, leaving tall pyramid-shaped halls lit from above, some of them open to the sea. A path and steps lead down to the main caves. The headland is also known for falconry: every June the town holds a festival where trained sparrowhawks and falcons are shown.
