Kerkouane
The only Punic town left untouched by Roman rebuilding
Kerkouane lies on a cliff at the tip of Cap Bon, facing the open sea. This Punic town was abandoned around the middle of the 3rd century BC, during the wars with Rome, and was never rebuilt, which makes it a unique record of Carthaginian urban life. UNESCO listed the town and its necropolis in 1985. Low walls trace a regular grid of streets and houses, many with their own hip baths lined with red cement. A Tanit symbol is set into one floor. A small museum displays pottery, jewellery and a painted wooden sarcophagus lid found nearby.
