Kelibia Fortress
Hilltop fortress over a fishing port and clear-water beaches
Kelibia is a fishing town on the east coast of Cap Bon. Its fortress crowns a rocky hill above the harbour, on a site fortified since Punic times, when the town was called Aspis, later Clupea to the Romans. The walls visible today are mainly Byzantine, reworked by later Arab, Spanish and Ottoman garrisons. Inside you can walk the ramparts, see cisterns and a small chapel, and look out over the port, the coast and, on clear days, towards Sicily. Below the fort, El Mansoura and other beaches have fine sand and very clear water. The town is also known for its dry muscat wine.
