Ksar Ghilane
Hot-spring oasis amid the dunes, beside a Roman desert fort
Ksar Ghilane is a small oasis on the eastern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, the most remote of the regularly visited desert spots in Tunisia. Its focus is a warm spring feeding a palm-fringed pool where visitors swim, surrounded by desert camps with tents and restaurants. From the oasis, camel or quad rides lead about 2 km across the dunes to the ruins of Tisavar, a small Roman fort built in the early 3rd century on the frontier of the empire. The atmosphere is best in the evening and at sunrise, when the dunes turn orange and day visitors have left.
