Tozeur Medina (Ouled El Hadef)
Patterned brick lanes beside a great date-palm oasis
Tozeur, on the northern shore of Chott el Jerid, grew rich on the caravan trade and on its oasis, one of the largest in Tunisia, famous for Deglet Nour dates. Its old quarter, Ouled El Hadef, dates largely from the 14th century and is known for its walls of yellow brick laid in raised geometric patterns, a style found in few other places. Covered passages and narrow lanes lead between houses with carved wooden doors. The palm grove itself, irrigated by springs and channels, can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by horse cart, and also shelters fruit trees and vegetable gardens.
